Adult General Education programs are a group of courses designed for students who are reading and performing math computations at or above the ninth-grade level. These review courses include preparation for taking the General Education Development (GED) tests; courses for high school credit leading to a high school diploma; study courses designed to serve the general education needs of adults as individuals, as parents, as members of families, and as citizens; and as current potential employees. These courses are and also of value to students who wish to pursue postsecondary educational opportunities.
The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program is comprises a group of courses designed to aid students who are performing below the ninth-grade level. The courses include reading, mathematics, social studies, science, health, language arts, consumer education, English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), life-coping skills, and adult life stages, all designed to help the student obtain a level of education that support his or her personal and career goals.
HML Adult’s ABE program is lab based and features individualized, group, and computer-assisted instruction. Our ABE teachers are specialists in math, language arts, reading, and science.
The purpose of the Citizenship is to prepare students for success in the naturalization process required for all who have United States citizenship as a goal. The content includes preparation for the Citizenship Test by studying U.S. history, government, culture and symbols, with specific emphasis on rights and responsibilities under the Constitution of the United States of America.
The English for Speakers of Other Languages/English as a Second Language (ESOL/ESL) program provides courses that enable adults to acquire English-language proficiency. Through a curriculum that integrates life-skills content with language functions and relevant grammar, students learn to use English to achieve their goals and to employ critical-thinking skills to transfer the classroom experience to

M-DCPS adult centers use Florida’s Standardized Student Syllabi; placement of students into the ESOL program is done by using the appropriate placement test.
ESOL teachers at HML Adult are certified and have many years of experience. In addition, they all receive regular training in effective ESOL teaching methods. We also offer on all three campuses - Main Campus, Filer, and Marti - an innovative ESOL computer lab, where students can work individually on improving their ESOL skills, including pronunciation and vocabulary. Students attend the lab regularly with their classes, and can register for additional tutorial hours before class.
General Education Diploma (GED)
The GED program prepares students for academic and personal success through obtaining the necessary skills required to pass the Official GED Test and be awarded
a State of Florida High School Diploma. This program strives to motivate students not only to obtain GED, but also to utilize the acquired skills in the workforce and to achieve career and career training and job placement success. At Hialeah-Miami Lakes Adult and Community Education Center, GED preparation courses are offered morning, afternoon and evening in both English and Spanish.
Adult High School for Co-Enrolled Students
The High School Co-enrolled program provides students, currently enrolled in a 9-12 secondary school and lacking credits necessary to graduate with their cohort class, may obtain those credits through the Adult General Education High School program on a limited basis. Enrollment for these courses requires day school principal and parental approval.

Adult vocational (certificate career education) programs prepare individuals for employment. Preparatory programs train individuals for initial entry into an occupation. Other courses may be designed as prevocational courses that teach the practical generic skills, but do not prepare students for entry into specific occupations.

CDA Child Development Associate
This program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the Education and Training career cluster. It provides technical skill proficiency, and includes competency-based applied learning that contributes to the academic knowledge, higher-order reasoning and problem-solving skills, work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, occupation-specific skills, and knowledge of all aspects of the Education and Training career cluster.
This program consists of 600 hours (120 hours of classroom instruction and 480 hours of direct work with children). Students must create and maintain a Professional Resource File as a requirement of the program.
Child Care Center Operations
The purpose of this program is to prepare students to become a Child Care Center Director/ Administrator. The program follows the same rigorous standards as the CDA, above.
The content includes but is not limited to organizational leadership, financial management, legal obligations and responsibilities, educational programming, marketing strategies, assessment, monitoring practices, observations, referrals and collaboration of programs with families and community resources.
Private Security Officer
This course prepares the student for the requirements to apply for a state of Florida “D” license.The program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the Law, Public Safety & Security career cluster. It provides technical skill proficiency, and includes competency-based applied learning that contributes to the academic knowledge, higher-order reasoning and problem-solving skills, work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, occupation-specific skills, and knowledge of all aspects of the Law, Public Safety & Security career cluster.
Students must complete 24 hours of training (Course A) before initial application for, and 16 hours of training (Course B) upon the first application for renewal of, a Class "D" license.
Private Investigator Intern
This course prepares the student for the requirements to apply for a state of Florida “CC” license.
